How to Compress an Image for Zoom
- Upload your image: Any photo or digital image works. Landscape (wider than tall) images fill the screen best.
- Set max width to 1920 px: Click in the "max width" box above and type
1920. This creates a 1920×1080 or 1920×1440 image depending on your photo's aspect ratio. - Keep quality high: Zoom backgrounds are visible as backdrop to you and other participants, so use 85–90% quality in the quality slider. A Zoom background should look sharp.
- Download: Save the compressed image (typically 1.5–3 MB).
- Upload to Zoom: In the Zoom app, click your avatar, select "Settings" → "Virtual Backgrounds", and upload your compressed image.
Why Size Matters for Zoom Backgrounds
Zoom's servers optimize your background image for different participants' connections and screen sizes. A 5 MB image uploads once and is reused; a 15 MB original takes longer and may be resized automatically by Zoom, losing quality. By compressing first, you keep the sharpness you want and reduce upload time.
Example: Make a Zoom Background from a Landscape Photo
Original: A 4000 × 2400 px travel photo, 3.5 MB.
Goal: Upload as a Zoom background that looks sharp in video calls.
Settings: Max width 1920 px, quality 85%.
Result: 1920 × 1152 px, 2.1 MB. Upload to Zoom, and it will be sharp and blur-friendly in your calls.
