Reduce a photo's file size
Two things make a photo big: how many pixels it has and how aggressively it is compressed. You can lower either, or both. The tool shows the before and after size for every image so you can stop as soon as it is small enough.
Two levers
- Dimensions. A 4000 px-wide photo shown in a 800 px slot wastes most of its pixels. Set “Max width/height” to the size you actually need. This is usually the biggest saving.
- Quality. For JPG and WebP, lowering quality from 100% to about 75% typically cuts the file dramatically with little visible change.
Hitting an upload limit
If a form says “maximum 2 MB”, compress once, check the result, and lower the quality or the max size a notch if it is still too big. Repeat until it fits. Each run starts from your original file, so quality is not lost by repeating.
A note on PNG
PNG is lossless, so the quality slider does nothing for it. To shrink a PNG, reduce its dimensions. With Pro you can also convert a PNG photo to JPG or WebP, which are far smaller for photographs.
