- Before: Full portrait photo (2 MP, 1600×1200 px) = 800 KB
- Action: Crop to face, resize to 100×100 px, reduce quality to 85%
- After: 8 KB — ultra-light, instant upload
- Result: Avatar displays immediately on forums, Discord, Slack
Step-by-Step Guide
- Upload your photo. Drag and drop or click to select. Any photo works — headshot, full body, cartoon, etc. All processing happens in your browser.
- Crop to face or focal point. Avatars are tiny, so only the center of the image will be visible. Most platforms will auto-crop at upload, but if the tool allows manual cropping, center your face or logo.
- Resize to 100×100 pixels minimum (or 128×128 for Discord). At 100×100 px, even a simple shape or icon becomes visible. For 200×200 px avatars, more detail is preserved.
- Reduce quality to 85%. At this small size, 85% quality is imperceptible from 100%. The file size drops from 50 KB to 8–12 KB.
- Choose JPEG format. JPEG is perfect for small avatars. A 100×100 px JPEG at 85% quality is typically 5–10 KB. PNG will be 20–30 KB for the same dimensions.
- Preview on a small screen. Zoom out on the preview or view on your phone to see how the avatar will actually appear to others.
- Download. Click "Download" to save your avatar. The filename will be avatar.jpg or similar.
- Upload to your profile. Go to your forum, Discord, Slack, or community settings and upload the compressed avatar. Most platforms accept it immediately.
Pro Tips
- Keep it simple and recognizable. At 100×100 px, fine details disappear. A bold color, clear face, or distinctive logo compresses better and is more recognizable than busy textures or small text.
- Avoid gradients and shadows. Gradients and shadows compress poorly at tiny sizes and can create blocky artifacts. Solid colors or high-contrast elements work best.
- Batch compress avatars across communities. If updating avatars on Discord, Slack, Reddit, and forums, use Pro to compress all at once. Free tier caps at 5 images per batch.
- Animated avatars (GIF) are larger. Some platforms allow GIF avatars. Animated GIFs are typically 200–500 KB. If the platform allows it but caps at 100 KB, stick with a static JPEG.
