Compress Image for Form Upload
Online forms (rental applications, job applications, medical portals, etc.) often have file size limits: 500 KB to 2 MB per image. Reduce your photo to fit the limit and upload without errors.
Common Form Size Limits
| Platform / Form Type | Typical Size Limit | Recommended Target |
|---|---|---|
| Google Forms | 100 MB (very generous) | 1–2 MB (for fast upload) |
| Rental application | 500 KB – 2 MB | 1 MB |
| Medical portal (doctor, dentist) | 1–5 MB | 2–3 MB |
| eCandidat (French universities) | 2–5 MB per file | 2–3 MB |
| Job application portal | 500 KB – 2 MB | 1 MB |
| Loan / mortgage application | 1–3 MB | 2 MB |
| Typeform / survey | 5 MB | 2–3 MB |
How to Find the Size Limit for Your Form
- Look for a help text below the upload button (e.g., "Max file size: 2 MB")
- Check the form's FAQ or instructions page
- If uploading fails, the error message will tell you the limit
- If unsure, compress to 1 MB or less — almost all forms accept that
Quick Example: Before & After
- Before: Rental application photo = 3 MB (exceeds 2 MB limit)
- Action: Reduce quality to 75%, keep dimensions, use JPEG
- After: 1.2 MB — under the limit
- Result: Form accepts upload without error
Step-by-Step Guide
- Check the form's size limit. Before compressing, find the maximum file size the form accepts. Look for text near the upload button or in the form instructions.
- Upload your photo to this tool. Drag and drop or click to select.
- Reduce quality to 75–80%. Start with 75%. If the file is still over the limit, reduce to 70%. Most forms won't see a quality difference below 75%.
- Keep dimensions unchanged. Unless your photo is extremely large (over 3000 px wide), don't resize. Most forms downscale on their end anyway.
- Use JPEG format. JPEG creates much smaller files than PNG. Use PNG only if you need transparency (rare for forms).
- Check the file size. Before downloading, note the compressed size shown on the page. Compare it to the form's limit.
- Download and upload to the form. Click "Download," then upload to the form's file input.
- If it still fails: Reduce quality another 5% and retry, or resize width to 2000 px.
Pro Tips
- Don't wait for an upload error. Pre-compress before submitting the form. If your file is too large, you'll have to fill out the form again, which is frustrating.
- Test with one image first. If uploading 3 photos to one form, compress and upload one, confirm it works, then upload the other two.
- Use Pro for batch uploads. Free tier caps at 5 images. Pro unlocks unlimited, so you can compress 50+ rental application photos at once.
- Save the compressed versions. Keep a folder of compressed photos so you don't have to re-compress for future form submissions.
