Compress Image for Slack

Slack compresses images, but uploads large files slowly. Reduce a 4 MB photo to 600–800 KB before uploading: your image posts instantly, and teammates see a clear version in the chat and on mobile devices.

Slack Image Upload and Display

What to Compress For Typical File Size Best Format Tips
Channel photo share 600–800 KB JPEG @ 75–80% Instant upload, viewable on all devices
Mobile chat 300–500 KB JPEG @ 70% Works over WiFi and 4G
Slack thread reply 500–700 KB JPEG @ 75% Shows in thread preview and Slack app

How to Compress for Slack

  1. Pick JPEG format: PNG for images with transparency, JPEG for photos. Slack applies its own compression anyway, so JPEG at 75–80% quality is a safe default.
  2. Aim for 600–800 KB: Upload your original photo above, adjust quality down to around 75%, and use the "Target size" tool if you want to hit a specific file size. Check the compressed file size after download and tweak if needed.
  3. For mobile-only audiences: Drop to 300–500 KB. Most teammates read Slack on their phones, and a smaller file loads faster on less reliable connections.
  4. Download and upload to Slack: Slack may recompress the image slightly, but it will start from your optimized version instead of a huge original.

Why Slack Image Size Matters

Slack's servers recompress images for preview and mobile views, but they start from your uploaded file. A 4 MB original takes time to upload and sync; a 700 KB version is instant. Slack's final image in the chat may be the same visual quality, but your upload is faster and your teammates see it without waiting.

Example: Compress a 4 MB Photo for Slack

Original: 4000 × 3000 px iPhone photo, 4.2 MB.
Goal: Upload to Slack within seconds, visible in channel and thread.
Settings: JPEG format, 75% quality, max width 1600 px (Slack displays at 480 px in the chat anyway).
Result: 680 KB. Uploads in 1–2 seconds on any connection, and Slack's preview is indistinguishable from the original.
