Compress Image for WhatsApp

WhatsApp re-compresses images when you send them, which can reduce quality. Compress your photo first—to your own quality standard—before uploading to WhatsApp, so you control the result instead of WhatsApp's automatic settings.

Why Compress Before Sending on WhatsApp

Scenario File Size Quality Setting Result
Send original (6 MB) 6 MB WhatsApp's default WhatsApp's compression; you don't control quality
Compress to 1.5 MB @ 80% 1.5 MB You choose 80% Your quality, WhatsApp's lighter re-compression
Compress to 800 KB @ 70% 800 KB You choose 70% Smaller file, still recognizable detail

How to Compress for WhatsApp

  1. Upload your photo: Any camera or phone photo works.
  2. Set quality to 80–85%: This is the sweet spot for WhatsApp—enough detail that WhatsApp's re-compression doesn't degrade it further, but small enough to send on 3G or slow WiFi.
  3. Keep max width around 1200 px: WhatsApp displays images at 360 px wide on phones and up to 600 px on tablets, so 1200 px is more than enough.
  4. Download: Save your compressed image (typically 800 KB–1.5 MB).
  5. Send on WhatsApp: Open the chat, tap the attachment icon, select the compressed image, and send. It will send instantly and arrive with your chosen quality.

Understanding WhatsApp's Compression

WhatsApp compresses all images by default to speed up sending and reduce data use. If you send a 6 MB original, WhatsApp re-encodes it, which can lose detail you didn't want to lose. By compressing to 1–2 MB first at a quality level you're happy with, you get the best of both: fast sending plus quality you control. WhatsApp will still apply a light re-compression, but your image will degrade less.

Example: Send a Sharp Photo on WhatsApp

Original: Camera photo, 4000 × 3000 px, 4.5 MB.
Goal: Send to family quickly, with recognizable detail and color.
Settings: Max width 1200 px, quality 80%.
Result: 1200 × 900 px, 1.1 MB. Sends in seconds on any connection, and the photo looks sharp on their phone.
